One especially intriguing thing about living in Bandon is the accessibility to a bounty of outdoor activities in an unspoiled environment. The air is clean, it’s green almost everywhere you look and the rolling waves of the ocean never ceases to lull you into calmness. We have a unique opportunity here in that, it doesn’t take much and we don’t have to drive a far distance to get to a trailhead for a little one on one time with mother nature. Our most recent adventure brought us just south of world famous, Langlois, to the Floras Lake State Park and Boice-Cope County Park.
Boice-Cope County Park manages Floras Lake State Park and offers 34 campsites overlooking Floras Lake and a boat ramp. You do not need to set up camp to enjoy the park, just make sure to pay the $2.00 Day Use fee when you park. Floras Lake sees lots of avid wind surfers during its peak season. We chose to pick up the Oregon Coast Trail from Floras Lake and head south towards Blacklock Point.
Under the cover of the forest canopy, you can hear the comfort of the ocean, a lot of bird chatter, and an occasional ground squirrel might run across your path. Keep your eyes out for tiny green frogs, slow moving newts and salamanders, and of course, slimy banana slugs.
The trail is well managed with signage and the path is clearly marked. You can venture down side trails to find enchanting overlooks and breath taking ocean views. While mostly flat, it can be steep in parts and there are several bridges to cross. The Oregon Coast Trail is a dog friendly trail but pets must be leashed and wasted removed. As always, wear appropriate footwear, bring water, and a camera to capture your memories.
